Common CV Mistakes to Avoid

A large checklist

Your CV could be holding you back if it:

  1. Fails to grab attention.
  2. Is poorly designed or formatted.
  3. Focuses on listing tasks and responsibilities like you would find in a job description.
  4. Overlooks key achievements or fails to highlight measurable successes.
  5. Neglects to convey your personality, behavioural strengths, and what you bring to a team.

In order to succeed, your CV must stand out.

The way to think of it is a good CV may not be good enough.

To succeed, your CV may need to be great.

CV Development Tips for Success

A CV on a desk with a green tick

Effective CV development is about more than just listing your past roles, tasks and responsibilities.

To truly stand out:

  1. Customise your CV for each application, tailoring it to highlight how your experience meets each employer’s specific needs.
  2. Focus on your achievements on your CV not just your responsibilities.
  3. Use measurable results to demonstrate the impact made and value added.
  4. Use tools like a Belbin Team Roles report to emphasise your unique strengths and contributions.

To help you stand out from other candidates, demonstrate how your behavioural qualities and teamwork skills align with the employer’s needs.

How to Enhance your CV

Want to…

Make your CV stand out and help you to land more interviews?

Increase the chance of your CV ending up in the “yes” pile for an interview?

Transform your CV from a list of jobs, tasks and responsibilities into a document that sells your achievements and what you offer?

Highlight your behaviours and personality not just your skills and knowledge?

Here are some ways to enhance your CV:

Sell Yourself - Don’t be Modest

Invest time building a CV that demonstrates your strengths, achievements, and what makes you unique as a candidate.

Customise for Each Role

Tailor your CV to the job description. If you align your skills and experience with what the employer is looking for, you can more readily demonstrate you are the ideal fit.

Grammar and Spelling

Spelling or grammar mistakes can be a dealbreaker. Employers often eliminate candidates for CV errors, so proofread carefully before applying.

Highlight Achievements

Don’t be too modest - sell yourself. Don’t just list responsibilities. Focus on accomplishments and results. Structure your achievements using the C.A.R. formula below (Challenge, Action, Result).

Let Your Behavioural Skills Shine

Your CV should also reflect your behavioural strengths and show how you’ll fit into the team and company culture.

Keep it clear and concise

Two to three pages (typically), an easy-to-read structure and design, with no jargon. Someone scanning quickly should be able to find your strongest contributions, not hunt for them.

Quick tip - The AI tool Grammarly can help with grammar and spelling. It has a free version. Grammarly can quickly check your writing for mistakes for you.

Practical Example

Let’s look at some practical examples of how you can use a Belbin Team Role Report to improve your chance of success.

Jo is seeking a new job and has completed a Belbin Team Roles Report. As you can see from the graph below, Jo’s top two team roles are Shaper and Co-ordinator, and the lowest two are Monitor Evaluator and Specialist.

What Jo’s Report Actually Says

Jo’s report is the sample Individual Report you can read on this site, so every phrase quoted here comes straight out of it. Three of its pages do most of the work for a CV.

Page 4 of the sample Belbin Individual Report: Team Role Feedback for Jo Pink, with the percentile chart

Your Team Role Preferences

The graph page opens with the headline that Shaper and Co-ordinator are Jo’s top contributions, and sums Jo up in a line: you like to manage others and lead from the front. You have a need to achieve and drive things forward.

Team Role Feedback

The richest page for CV writing. It credits Jo with a firm grasp of objectives: an ability to drive both yourself and others, and a readiness to maximise the resources of a team, alongside a style that is calm, unflappable, tolerant and consultative, never losing sight of priorities and with a talent for establishing a consensus.

Suggested Work Styles

Four pairings of Jo’s top roles, each with a sentence to borrow: Controlling (Shaper and Co-ordinator), Exploiting Opportunities (Shaper and Resource Investigator), Pushing for Change (Shaper and Plant) and Facilitating (Co-ordinator and Resource Investigator).

Read together, those point at being suited to a role that provides scope to lead, chase opportunities and build relationships outside the team. Jo is most comfortable adopting a leading position with scope to exercise personal responsibility. Roles like business development or sales management may suit well. A role with little latitude and too much detail may not.

Knowing what you are best suited to, and targeting the right type of roles, can increase your chance of success and reduce the time spent applying for roles you are less well suited to.

Using a Belbin Report to Enhance Your CV

Someone seated reading their report

A Belbin Team Role report can transform your CV, adding greater depth and insight into your behavioural strengths.

It allows you to:

  • Showcase your unique contributions to a team.
  • Highlight attributes that align with the role’s requirements.
  • Make your CV stand out by linking your behavioural strengths to professional achievements.

Turning Report Language into a CV Profile

Many CV profiles describe the job held rather than the person in it. The Belbin report provides language to describe required behaviours.

Before

Operations Manager with 20 years’ experience across commercial and operational teams. Works well with people at all levels. Used to working to tight timescales in a fast-paced work environment with a wide range of clients and suppliers. Good team player.

True, but it could describe hundreds of candidates.

After

Operations Manager with 20 years’ experience across commercial and operational teams. A natural leader who leads from the front, with an open and consultative management style and a talent for establishing consensus. Has a thorough grasp of key business objectives and focuses on maximising the resources within a team to drive and motivate them towards a high level of performance. Highly experienced in working to tight timescales in a fast-paced environment, maintaining a calm and unflappable approach. Adept at helping the team develop external links, building strong and lasting relationships with a wide range of clients and suppliers. Brings a specific skill set to the team.

Nothing in the second version is invented. It comes directly from the report: leads from the front, a talent for establishing a consensus, maximising the resources of a team and calm and unflappable are all the report’s own words, and helping the team develop external links is its line about Jo and the world outside the organisation. Exactly the kind of behavioural skills employers may be seeking.

The report helps provide the language.

You can supply supporting evidence.

Customising Your CV with Belbin Roles

Developing a customised CV is vital to getting noticed, and it can allow you to demonstrate your preferred or strong Belbin Roles styles, such as Shaper or Implementer.

That means you can highlight very specific, not generic, behavioural strengths, ensuring your CV reflects the traits each role requires with statements like:

  • “Led a team to achieve a 20% increase in productivity by implementing structured processes and driving performance.”
  • “Excelled in fast-paced environments by pushing for change and delivering results under tight deadlines.”

By using this approach, it helps employers clearly see your strengths and how they translate into workplace success.

Once you incorporate Belbin roles content into your CV, it can add more depth and context to your achievements, particularly where employers are interested in how candidates may fit into their teams and contribute to the company culture.

Highlighting your key team role styles can demonstrate greater self-awareness and show how your abilities can align with the role, the team and the company.

Identifying Roles You’re Best Suited To

Belbin reports can be used to improve self-awareness of your behavioural strengths and identify roles that fit your natural talents.

For example, someone with a strong Implementer and Monitor Evaluator profile might excel in more operational or analytical positions. Knowing this can help guide your job search and refine how you present yourself to employers.

A figure climbing three steps

How can I make the most of my Achievements?

Achievements can demonstrate how well you have carried out a task / project or overcome challenges or problems.

Particularly think about what you are most proud of having delivered at work or what you have been praised for doing well. Achievements can be personal or work-based and delivered individually or as part of a team. Just make sure you don’t take all the credit for the work of the team.

When writing achievement statements, it is beneficial to use the C.A.R. formula:

  • Challenge - What was the task, problem or issue you faced?
  • Action - what did you do to resolve this?
  • Result - what was the impact or tangible benefit that was gained?

A Worked Achievement Statement

Here is Jo’s example C.A.R. achievement written out in full, with the three parts marked so you can see the formula in action.

Responsible for achieving a £300k per annum sales target. (Challenge) After only three months in the role, proactively secured the opportunity to bid for work with a large multi-national company. Successfully tendered for and won a 12-month contract for a training and development programme covering over 200 personnel. (Action) In year one the programme achieved a customer satisfaction rating of 97% and was extended by a further two years, taking the total contract value to £1.2m over three years. (Result)

Notice how little of that is a list of duties.

The challenge helps define the issue, the action shows what Jo actually did, and the result is what was achieved. The results part is what makes all the difference and what employers will be much more interested in.

Three or four key achievement statements like this, well placed nearer the beginning of the CV for greatest impact, may do more for you than listing another page of responsibilities.

These examples are adapted from our guide on How to improve your CV and interview technique using your Belbin Team Role Report, developed by White Cube Consulting.

Highlighting achievements using the C.A.R. formula.

An upward trend

Example - Strong achievement structure using the C.A.R. format.

  • Challenge - Achieving a £300k annual sales target
  • Action - Secured and won a £1.2m, multi year contract through proactive business development
  • Result - Achieved a 97% customer satisfaction rating and expanded the contract for 2 additional years.
