The Resource Investigator Team Role: Finding Opportunities Beyond the Team

Every team benefits from knowing what is happening beyond its own walls. Resource Investigators are outgoing and enthusiastic. They explore opportunities, build contacts and bring useful ideas and information back to the team.

They are particularly valuable when a project needs fresh possibilities, new partnerships or insight into what others are doing.

What a Resource Investigator brings

  • Contacts and relationships beyond the immediate team.
  • Curiosity about new opportunities, resources and approaches.
  • Enthusiasm that helps people engage with a new possibility.
  • The confidence to approach others and open conversations.

Allowable weaknesses

Resource Investigators can be over-optimistic and may lose interest once their initial enthusiasm has passed. They can move on to the next opportunity before the last one has been followed through. These tendencies are allowable while their outward-looking contribution benefits the team.

When a weakness becomes a problem

Promises that are not followed up can damage trust with colleagues, customers and partners. Enthusiasm needs to be supported by reliable commitments.

Getting the best from Resource Investigator behaviour

  • Involve them when the team needs external perspectives, contacts or options.
  • Give them a clear purpose for networking and opportunity-finding.
  • Capture contacts, ideas and commitments in a shared system.
  • Agree who will own follow-up and when progress will be reviewed.
  • Don’t confuse a lively presentation with a fully evaluated opportunity.

The Resource Investigator in a team

Resource Investigators and Plants both introduce new possibilities. The Plant is more likely to generate an original idea independently, while the Resource Investigator tends to discover possibilities through exploration and other people. Implementers can help translate opportunities into workable actions, and Completer Finishers can support accurate follow-through.

Is Resource Investigator one of your preferred Team Roles?

A strong external network is useful, but Belbin looks beyond job titles such as sales or business development. Resource Investigator behaviour can appear in any function. An Individual Report, incorporating Observer feedback, helps show whether colleagues recognise this contribution and where it is most effective.

Find Out Which Team Roles Are Yours

A Belbin Individual Report combines your own Self-Perception with feedback from the people who work with you, so you see the contribution colleagues actually experience.
