The Monitor Evaluator Team Role: Sound Judgement and Better Decisions

A team can be full of energy and good intentions yet still choose the wrong course. Monitor Evaluator behaviour helps prevent that.

Monitor Evaluators are sober, strategic and discerning. They consider the available options and assess their merits with care.

What a Monitor Evaluator brings

  • Objective consideration of competing proposals.
  • Clear-headed judgement when enthusiasm is running ahead of evidence.
  • The ability to identify risks, assumptions and weaknesses in a plan.
  • A considered perspective when important decisions must be made.

Allowable weaknesses

Monitor Evaluators may lack the drive to inspire others and can seem overly critical. Their preference for careful assessment can be mistaken for negativity or delay. These tendencies are allowable when balanced by sound judgement that improves decisions.

When a weakness becomes a problem

Constant criticism without a reasoned alternative, or analysis that prevents any decision being made, stops helping the team. Judgement should move the discussion forward.

Getting the best from Monitor Evaluator behaviour

  • Provide information and options in advance rather than demanding an instant verdict.
  • Ask what the evidence supports, what is missing and which risks matter most.
  • Invite a recommendation as well as a critique: ‘Which option would you choose, and why?’
  • Make space for quieter, considered contributions before the group commits.
  • Agree when analysis is sufficient and a decision must be reached.

The Monitor Evaluator in a team

A Plant may generate possibilities while a Monitor Evaluator assesses them. A Shaper may press for action while a Monitor Evaluator asks whether the direction is sound. Both contributions are useful, provided challenge is constructive and decisions are not endlessly postponed.

Monitor Evaluator behaviour is especially valuable when a team is making consequential choices, comparing investments or reviewing a proposal with significant risks. It is far less useful if the team asks for analysis and then ignores the conclusions.

Is Monitor Evaluator one of your preferred Team Roles?

A Team Role preference is not the same as being a cautious person in every situation. Belbin looks at the contributions people make at work, informed by both Self-Perception and Observer feedback. The resulting picture may reveal strengths that colleagues rely on but the individual takes for granted.

Next step: Use a Belbin Individual Report to understand your decision-making contribution, or a Team Report to explore how thinking and judgement are distributed across the team.
